Ο Σκεπτικισμός αντιμάχεται τους εδραιωμένους θεσμούς. Αν διδάξουμε οποιονδήποτε, ας πούμε μαθητές γυμνασίου, τη συνήθεια του σκεπτικισμού, μπορεί να μην περιορίσουν τον σκεπτικισμό τους σε διαφημίσεις χαρτοριχτρών και σε ηλικίας 35000 ετών φαντάσματα. Πιθανόν να αρχίσουν να κάνουν άβολες ερωτήσεις γύρω από οικονομικά, κοινωνικά, πολιτικά, ή θρησκευτικά κατεστημένα. Που θα βρεθούμε τότε;

Στη μετάφραση άλλαξα τα παραδείγματα που χρησιμοποίησε ο Carl Sagan γιατί δεν είχαν νόημα χωρίς τα (πάρα πολλά) συμφραζόμενα.

Skepticism challenges established institutions. If we teach everybody, let’s say high school students, the habit of being skeptical, perhaps they will not restrict their skepticism to aspirin commercials and 35,000-year-old channelers (or channelees). Maybe they’ll start asking awkward questions about economic, or social, or political, or religious institutions. Then where will we be?

Skepticism will lead to final nihilism. Faith is not only the cornerstone of religion, but of every human action, that is, also of skepticism. Actions driven purely by skepticism equals to non-action. Than say bye-bye to every human civilization. That explains why skeptic people (and atheists as well) fear to develop their thoughts to the end, but at some points they will draw back from their meditations and declare some ideas as unquestionable dogmas. A new religion will then have been established. At this point, than, atheists have become fanatic theists.
