This book, published in 1996, could perhaps be thought of as containing the first indications of what would later become Richard Dawkins’ full blown attack on religion. It seems to me that it is, in a way, a bridge between the earlier Dawkins who was talking mostly about biology and very little about the hoax of religion, …

…and the later Dawkins who has been mostly bashing god and often bringing biology into the picture as an aid to better make his point. Superbly rendered as we have come to always expect from professor Dawkins, easy to read and easy to understand, I fully recommend it.

The audiobook is narrated by the professor himself, who does better justice to it than any professional narator could, as his skill in narrating is in par with his skill in writing.

Quote from the book:

Alternatively, if there is only one Creator who made the tiger and the lamb, the cheetah and the gazelle, what is He playing at? Is he a sadist who enjoys spectator blood sports? Is he trying to avoid overpopulation in the mammals of Africa? Is he manuvering to maximize David Attenborough’s television ratings? … the true utility function of life, that which is being maximized in the natural world, is DNA survival. But DNA is not floating free; it is locked up in living bodies and it has make the most of the levers of power at its disposal.

The duration of the audiobook was 2 hours and 53 minutes.
